    Before we send our animals to there forever homes we ensure they are well prepared for their new lives, this includes:-

    • Kennel cough vaccination
    • At least 1st vaccination of a two part course
    • Micro-chipping
    • Neutering or a voucher towards the cost if we are unable to neuter here
    • Any veterinary costs incurred
    • Behaviourist consultation, if required
    Rehoming Process

    Staff are here to ensure the animals find homes which suit their needs. Most animals in our care have not had the best start in life and may require special care or training. We will assess your experience and assist you in finding the right pet for your home. Although we want our animals to start their new life with you as quickly as possible, our re-homing process can take a few weeks from start to finish. The process is as follows: –

    • 3 Make a arrangements to meet your chosen animal
      We work on an appointment system so we may require you to make an appointment for another day.

      Supervised 1st meet: A member of staff will take the dog out for a walk with you. You will have the opportunity to
      spend time with the dog, ask questions and make sure it is a suitable match. If you do not already own a dog and the meet goes well, you can place a temporary reserve on our dog and arrange a second meet. Every person who lives permanently in the house where the dog will be staying will need to meet our dog at least twice before a full reserve can be placed.
    • 4 Make a arrangements to meet your chosen animal for a second time
      If you own a dog (or dogs) already, they will need to meet your potential new house members at least twice:
      1st dog meet: The 1st dog meet is on lead so the dogs can spend time together in a controlled manner.

      2nd dog meet: The 2nd dog meet starts on lead, if the dogs are mixing well, we will let them off lead in our secure compound to see how they interact. If all goes well, you can place a full reserve on our dog.

      If the meet doesn’t go as planned, we can discuss the options of further meets or of looking at other dogs which may be suitable.

      We recommend that after the 2nd dog meet, you come up and visit as much as possible so that the dogs can continue to interact. This makes the transition to the new home easier on both (or all) dogs.

      PLEASE NOTE: We advise that you order an ID tag either at the centre when you place your full reserve or as soon as possible from another shop. You will need to bring your dog tag with you when you come to collect your new pet from the centre. If you have pre-ordered the tag and it has not arrived when you come to collect your new pet, we ask that you bring proof of purchase with you.
    • 5 Arrange a home check
      Once a full reserve has been placed on the dog, you will be put forward for a home check. Everyone adopting an animal through the centre is subject to a home check under RSPCA Policy, to ensure your home is suitable for your prospective new dog. One of our home checkers will be in touch to arrange a time that is convenient to visit you. This can take up to 7-10 days after the Full Reserve has been placed, but we do try to complete them as quickly as possible.

      The home checker will contact the centre and advise us of their visit. The home checker will advise if your house is
      ready, or we may be advised that work is needed to be carried out before your home is ‘dog-proof’, or it might be that the home is not suitable for the dog in question. The centre will contact you to discuss any points raised by the home checker if necessary or to arrange collection of your new pet.
    • 6 Arrange to take your animal home
      When you come to collect your dog, you will need to bring a collar, lead and dog tag with you. We do sell them at the centre and the profit made comes back directly to this centre, to benefit the animals here. You will also need to ensure you are able to transport your new pet home safely.

      PLEASE NOTE: You may not be able to collect until your new pet has been neutered and medically signed off by our vet, if they have been on treatment during their time at the centre. We do allow some animals to be re-homed on treatment, but this is looked at on a case by case basis.

    FAQs
    • What does ‘under assessment’ mean?
      This means that the animal you are looking at hasn’t been through our thorough behaviour assessment which includes looking at previous history, observing and socialising. Until an animal is fully assessed you will be unable to come and meet him or her. You can register your interest in an animal under assessment by filling in our application form.
    • How long can an animal be ‘under assessment’?
      This can vary but will usually take around 1-2 weeks. Animals with a full history will be assessed quicker than those without. Animals with behaviour issues can take several weeks before they are ready for rehoming.
    • Do you provide any veterinary services?
      We don’t have a vet onsite here at Danaher so this means we are unable to assist with ill animals or injured wildlife. If you find an animal that is injured please ring 0300 1234 999.
    • Do you provide any financial help towards veterinary services?
      We are unable to provide any financial assistant towards veterinary care. Please visit https://www.rspca.org.uk/whatwedo/care/financial to see if your local branch can offer assistance.
    • Why can’t I report cruelty directly to you?
      Although we’re affiliated to the RSPCA we’re an independent charity. This means that we adhere to all the rules and regulations that govern animal welfare for the animals in our care. We cannot get involved with welfare matters regarding owned animals or wildlife.     • Why can’t you take in an animal I want to surrender immediately?
      We have to prioritise those animals most in need of rescue and so it is unlikely we will be able to take in your animal straight away, if at all. We can add you to our enquiries list but this does not guarantee we will be able to assist you. We can provide you with alternative numbers for other charities to try.
    • Do you rehome to families with children?
      Yes! We rehome our animals with children of all ages. However, we are restricted on what age of children we can rehome too based on the history of the animal in question. For example, an exuberant, boisterous dog with no history will likely not be suitable to place with a baby. If animals are assessed as suitable to live with children of all ages they are rehomed very quickly. You may see the letters ‘SD’ next to animal, this stands for staff discretion. This means there is a chance we can rehome to slightly younger children if they have lived with dogs before.
    • Do you rehome dogs to people with cats?
      Yes! We assess all of our dogs to see whether they can be placed with cats. However, dogs that are suitable are rehomed very quickly.
    • I placed an interest in an animal, why didn’t I hear back from you?
      If you placed and interest and weren’t invited in this can mean several things; it may be that you weren’t suitable for the animal in question. It could also mean that you were suitable but we had interest from several other suitable adopters and sadly you missed out on this occasion. We apologise that we are unable to contact every applicant individually, we process over a hundred forms a week and are simply unable to achieve this.
    • Do you have an upper age limit when rehoming?
      No, we rehome to people of all ages, it doesn’t matter if you’re in your 20s or your 90s. We will do our best to select an appropriate animal for you. We do ask that you think about a contingency plan should you ever become unable to care for your pet. We can help you with planning for the future if needed.
    • What are your opening hours?
      We are open from 11am to 3pm every day including weekends apart from Wednesdays, when we are closed all day.
    • Do I need an appointment?
      For weekends, our busiest times, it is advisable you book an appointment. You can do so by e-mailing or calling reception on: 0300 111 4321 or reception@danaheranimalhome.org.uk
    • How much does it cost to adopt an animal?
      You can see our adoption fees and what they include here. You should research the costs involved for ongoing care of your chosen animal such as; insurance, food, deworming and flea treatments etc.
    • How long does it take to adopt an animal?
      The length of time it will take to go from interest to adoption can vary. If the animal is on ongoing veterinary treatment this may delay adoption. All our home checkers are volunteers so please be patient whilst we arrange this. If there are other dogs to meet (please see adoption process ‘link’ for more information). On average it takes around 3-4 weeks but please be patient if this process takes longer.
    • Why does everyone living in the house have to meet an animal I am adopting?
      We do this to make sure that everyone is on board with the adoption and they understand any quirks or traits regarding the animal in question. It is also a good idea to introduce any regularly visiting children too. If you’re thinking of engaging a dog walker or trainer we encourage you to bring them to meet the dog you are interested in too.
    • What do the different colour grades mean?
      Please see the chart here for an explanation on the different colours we assign to our animals.
    • What animals do you have for rehoming?
      We usually have dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents and small birds. Please visit our website for an up to date list of what we have available.
    • I live in a flat, can I still adopt?
      Yes! We rehome all types of animals to flats on a case by case basis. Please get in touch so we can talk to you about the kind of animals that might be suitable for you.
    • I don’t have access to a garden, can I still adopt?
      Yes! We rehome all types of animals to people with no garden on a case by case basis. Please get in touch so we can talk to you about the kind of animals that might be suitable for you.
    • I don’t have a fully secure garden, can I still adopt a dog?
      Yes! We rehome dogs to unsecure gardens on a case by case basis. Please get in touch so we can talk to you about the kind of animals that might be suitable for you.
    • What do the banners across the bottom of the animals on the website mean?
      Under Assessment – This animal has not been fully behaviour checked. Please see the FAQ called ‘what does under assessment mean?’ for further details.

      Available – means this animal is ready for rehoming and can be viewed.

      Temp Reserve – means someone has been to visit this animal and placed a reserve. This stage means we are still waiting for family members, dogs or animals to meet. You can still register an interest in this animal as there is a small chance they will become available again.

      Reserved – means all the various meets have been successful and we are awaiting confirmation of a successful home check. You can still register an interest in an animal but it is unlikely they will become available again.

      On Foster – means we have placed this animal in foster. Animals in foster are still available for rehoming but are not at the centre ready to be viewed. We will book you an appointment to view animals in foster if you are suitable.

Conditions of adoption
Please note the following re homing policies of the RSPCA Danaher Animal Home. You are required to click on the accept button below to acknowledge that you understand the terms and conditions of adopting an animal through our centre. Thank you for your co-operation.

  1. We are looking for long term, permanent homes for animals in our care and we need to be sure you can provide such a home. This means we have to ask questions about your personal circumstances.
  2. Please note that all payments are non-refundable. Please think carefully before putting a reserve on one of our animals.
  3. If you see an animal that you like, but it is not currently available for re-homing, we can take your details as an ‘Interest’ for that animal. We do not work on a ‘first come, first served’ basis – we try to find a home that is best suited to each individual animal. Due to the high numbers of public we have visiting our centre we only call ‘Interests’ who have been selected to meet the animals. If you do not hear from us, please feel free to call us or come back to the centre and we will be more than happy to help you to find your perfect pet. PLEASE NOTE: We are not obliged to disclose the reasons why people are not successful.
  4. We do not normally re-home to families with children under 3 years old, however families with children under 3 may be considered at our Managers discretion.
  5. All Allergies must be declared on the application form
  6. If you live in rented accommodation, we will need to see a copy of your lease to confirm that you are allowed to keep a pet. If it is unclear from your lease, we will require a written letter from your landlord.
  7. We do reserve the right to refuse an animal adoption under certain circumstances.
  8. All members of the household must come to the Animal Home before an animal can be reserved for you. This includes any existing dogs coming to meet a proposed new dog. We will normally ‘hold’ (temp reserve) the animal of your choice for you for up to 1 week (acting manager’s discretion) to allow everyone to come along and agree the new addition. We will also take a deposit of £15.00 (this is non-refundable)
  9. Once everyone has met and the staff are happy, this can then go to a full reserve and we will take a further deposit of £40.00 (this is also non-refundable). We will then put you through for a home check.
  10. A form of identification will be required to be shown before we can put you through for a home check. This can be a driver’s license, utility bill, etc.
  11. A Home Checker will need to visit you at home before you can adopt an animal. They will contact you directly to arrange this. The home checkers are volunteers so this can take up to 10 days but the home checkers do try and complete them as quickly as possible.
  12. All existing dogs or cats in the household should normally be neutered and vaccinated.
  13. Dogs are pack animals which need a lot of company and should not regularly be left alone for long periods at a time. We assess our dogs as best to our ability in which we feel they would cope with being left. Young animals need almost constant company, particularly puppies as they need help with socialisation and house training.
  14. A secure garden or exercise area for dogs is essential.
  15. Adoption will not be considered if you have holiday plans within the next two months.
  16. Veterinary fees can be expensive and adopters need to be able to meet the costs of both routine and emergency care. We strongly advise you arrange appropriative pet insurance cover to help cover emergency costs.
  17. Any veterinary costs incurred once an animal has been adopted are the sole responsibility of the adopter and we can offer no guarantee as to the future health of any animal. However we will make you aware of any conditions we find. Please note that the centre will not carry out any dental work which is deemed to be cosmetic.
  18. Within your adoption folder you will receive a routine medication form to say when your new pet has had routine products and also any vet sheets they may have occurred whilst at the centre.
  19. We will expect you to continue to seek medical advice for any illness and keep up with routine preventative treatments e.g. worming, vaccinations, flea treatment.
  20. All our animals are passed on in good faith and have received a health check on arrival (any concerns are passed onto our consulting vet). They are believed to be in normal health on leaving the centre except where specific conditions have been made known to the adopter. Therefore it is regretted that the Danaher Animal Home is unable to accept liability for any expenses or costs of any kind arising from sickness or injury of any nature developed by the animal (whether or not any known existing conditions or symptoms of the animal are made known to the adopter prior to this agreement) and the responsibility for and cost of future treatment shall be borne to the adopter.
  21. All dogs must leave the centre with a lead and collar with an identity disc. You can order one from the centre which will be delivered to your address within 2-5 days. Collars, leads and walking aids can also be purchased from the centre and the profit made comes back directly to the centre, to benefit the animals here.
